The Milliner's Guild and The Met
This past weekend I was delighted to go to The Met in NYC for the milliner's guild display of our Mildred Blount Contest hats. To say this was a life check the box moment is an understatement. I lived in New York during my twenties and early thirties and it is where I learned how to make hats. If I could have told that young woman that she would be back fifteen years later to see her hat in the museum, I never would have believed it.
I was also able to give an introduction to the guild and speak about Mildred Blount's life and her legacy of hats in the movies. If you do not know more about her, I highly recommend checking out the guild's website or wikipedia. She made hats for Gone with the Wind, Gigi, Easter Parade, and many more while also running her own boutique and designing for Gloria Vanderbilt, Marion Anderson, and Joan Crawford.
To put the icing on the cake, one of my daughter's was able to accompany me for her first trip to the city. Hearing stories from the other milliner's about doing the hats for the Wicked movie and Broadway plays cemented my status as the mom with the interesting job.
